In Praise of Wuss Rock (Repost)

Mr. Gerry Rafferty has died. The Scottish born, two-time one hit wonder died of liver failure in London. He was reclusive and unapproachable for many years preceding his death. It is said he had a problem with the drink, but do Scots really ever have a drinking problem? What he left us, is the single greatest anthem to 1970's wuss rock there ever was in Baker Street. Please to enjoy my appreciation here.

At the time of the original post, I had forgotten he was the lead vocalist for Stealers Wheel, which is how he became a one hit wonder the first time. He earned that distinction again from the immutable Baker Street. On the power of that track alone (no management or touring), the album on which it was featured sold 5.5 million copies. Read more about Raffery, here.

I do not own the album, but along with Baker Street is the little remembered track All Down the Line, which has its own charms and ubiquitous poppy hook. Please join me in a moment of sax-infused silence for one of the greats of wuss rock.

Thank you, Gerry. You were always a two-hit wonder to me.
